Prince Harry and Meghan have been a relationship for quite so long now and they recently got engaged. Meghan and Harry both looked really happy and delighted on the day of engagement. Now the plans of their weddings are being made and their wedding is expected to be in May 2018. So when Meghan Markle gets married to Prince Harry what will be her new name and title?
Just a few hours after Kensington Palace announced the news of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, people started making assumptions and there were a lot of discussions on social media about what will be their new names and titles. The consensus of most royal experts is that the couple is expected to take on the title of Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
As per Charles Kidd, editor of Debrett’s Peerage & Baronetage, he told that it is quite easy to take an idea of what titles are available to the couple because so many titles in the royal family have already been taken and now a few are left.
“They’re quite limited in the titles that are available. The Duke of Sussex is the front-runner without any doubt.”
What are the other options for suspended or available titles? The titles that are currently available include “the dukedoms of Clarence, Connaught, Windsor, Albany, and Cumberland and Teviotdale.”
According to The Telegraph, “by tradition” male members of the royal family “receive a title from the monarch on their wedding day.”
For instance if we look back to the day that Prince William married Kate Middleton, the Queen, William’s “granny,” officially announced the title of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for the couple.
So after her wedding with Prince Harry, Rachel Meghan Markle will be given the title of HRH (Her Royal Highness), the Duchess of Sussex. In fact, she will become the very first Duchess of Sussex.
The only previous Duke of Sussex married twice, yet as neither of his marriages was approved by his father, King George III, there was never a “Duchess of Sussex.” Because neither marriage was approved, the Duke’s children could not continue on with the title.
The burning question now is that will Meghan be called Duchess Rachel or will she continue to use her middle name ‘Meghan’ as she is mostly known as Meghan whenever discussed.
‘I knew she was the one from the very first day’: Beaming Prince Harry says he is ‘thrilled’ to announce engagement to Meghan Markle as she proudly shows off a sparkling ring made with Diana’s diamonds and designed by HIM. Announcement made a week after his grandmother the Queen celebrated her 70th wedding anniversary. Poignantly Harry chose first photocall in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace – loved by his late mother. Her majesty has given her blessing and she and Prince Philip say they are ‘delighted for the couple’. Harry and Meghan got engaged in London earlier this month and to marry in Spring 2018, Prince Charles said.
Meghan could become a princess or be given title Duchess of Sussex when she marries fifth in line to throne. Pair have not said where they’ll wed but it could be Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral or Windsor Castle.
