Revealed: Princess Diana’s wedding day secret that she kept from Prince Charles. Princess Diana’s wedding is considered the ultimate fairytale – but her makeup artists has now revealed the bride kept a secret on her big day.
Around 750 million people watched Prince Charles and Diana Spencer’s wedding at St Paul’s Cathedral in London on July 29, 1981. Her huge ivory dress, designed by David Emmanuel and his now ex-wife Elizabeth, was covered in layers of tulle, net and silk and overlaid with 10,000 pearls. Costing £1,050 to make at the time (£4,140 in today’s money), it has since become one of the world’s most iconic wedding dresses.
BUT THE PRINCESS OF WALES’ MAKE-UP ARTIST BARBARA DALY HAS NOW REVEALED DIANA ACTUALLY SPILT PERFUME ALL DOWN HER FRONT JUST HOURS BEFORE SHE WAS DUE TO WALK DOWN THE AISLE.
With her hair and makeup done and dress on, Princess Diana went to apply some of her favourite scent, Quelques Fleurs, on her wrists. But in her haste, she accidentally poured some of the liquid down her dress. With no way of removing it, Ms Daly told the princess to simply hold that spot on her dress as she walked so it looked as if she was lifting the front of her dress so she did not step on it. Photographs taken on the day of the wedding even show the moment Princess Diana clutched at the fabric to cover the spot where the perfume spilt with her hand as she approached the altar.
Fortunately for the new royal, guests and supporters all around the world were too busy swooning over her extravagant gown and the perfume stain went unnoticed. It was not Princess Diana’s only mistake of the day, however. She famously repeated her husband Prince Charles’ names back in the wrong order as the couple made their vows. The revelation comes after Elizabeth Emmanuel admitted she had to sew Princess Diana into her wedding dress despite attending 15 fittings.
The princess lost a shocking 5.5 inches from her waist in the lead up to her big day.
