Colin Tebbutt said he couldn’t bear allowing Charles, and Diana’s sisters, to see her body in such a state

Diana’s body was ‘made to look PRETTY’ for Prince Charles after Paris death crash. Princess Diana had her hair tidied and make-up applied as she lay dead in Paris before Prince Charles visited, her driver has revealed. Colin Tebbutt said he couldn’t bear allowing Charles, and Diana’s sisters, to see her body in such a state.

The now 77-year-old was the first member of Diana’s staff to arrive in Paris from London just hours after her death on August 31, 1997.

HE WAS HORRIFIED WHEN HE SAW THE PRINCESS LYING DEAD WITH JUST HER HEAD POKING OUT FROM BENEATH BLANKETS.

Tebbutt said while the 36-year-old’s face was barely marked from the crash, the hours in the swelteringly hot hospital room had taken their toll.

HE ADMITTED HE INVITED A FRENCH UNDERTAKER TO APPLY MAKE-UP TO HER FACE BEFORE THE FAMILY ARRIVED FROM BRITAIN.

DIANA’S BUTLER PAUL BURRELL THEN ATTENDED TO HAIR AND PUT A ROSARY ON THE BED TO MAKE SURE SHE WAS BEAUTIFUL, REPORTS THE SUN.

Mr Tebbutt said he was also horrified as ghouls nearby were climbing on roofs to try and get a view of the Princess.

DRIVER Colin Tebbutt worked on Diana’s staff for two years before her death

THE DRIVER SAID: “WHEN I RETURNED, SHE LOOKED 100% BETTER BUT IT WAS ONE OF THE HOTTEST DAYS OF THE YEAR AND THE ROOM WAS LIKE A FURNACE.

“[Paul Burrell] did her hair nicely then he put a rosary on the bed.

“Then, to my horror, I saw people climbing about on roofs. They were some distance away, but that was a blow.

“There were no blinds so I ordered some blankets to be brought and hung them at the windows.”

He described arriving at the hospital, only to find a parade of ghouls coming to “bow” before her corpse. Mr Tebbutt quickly shooed away these onlookers before tending to the body ahead of the arrival of the Prince and Di’s siblings Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes.

He said: “None of us sat with her that afternoon. She was in the room at peace, with guards outside.” Tebbutt previously spoke about how he thought Diana was alive as her eyes appeared to flicker open as the wind blew her lashes. The Princess was being driven in a Mercedes S-280 after she left the Hotel Ritz in Paris before crashing into a pillar in the Alma Tunnel.

Diana, boyfriend Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul all died, but her bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones survived the horror smash. Britain is preparing to mark the 20th anniversary of her death on August 31.
